On January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump stood in the Rotunda of the US Capitol Building, raised his right hand, and took the oath of office as the forty-seventh president of the United States. The oath completed, Trump shook hands with Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts, who had administered the oath, then shook hands with outgoing president Joe Biden, the man who had defeated him by 7 million votes just four years before. He shook the hands of a few other dignitaries and then turned—triumphantly—to the crowd.
This moment represented a striking turnaround from four years earlier, when on January 6, 2021, Trump publicly urged his supporters to march on the Capitol as Congress was certifying the results of the November presidential election. . . . Responding to Trump’s calls to “fight like hell,” more than one thousand of his supporters forced their way into the Capitol. They attacked and injured US Capitol Police officers, rampaged through the halls, and desecrated the seat of American democracy.
Now, four years later, the building had been beautifully restored, and the crowd that greeted Trump was on its feet, cheering. The ovation marked a political comeback unlike any the nation had ever seen. Trump stepped to the microphone. “The golden age of America begins right now,” he said. “From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation.” With Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Trump had defeated in the November 2024 election, seated just a few feet away, Trump described his plans as president. Foremost among these plans was his determination to undo nearly everything the Biden-Harris administration had achieved in its four-year term.
